Avoid the Three Cs to Help Slow the Spread
The City of Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Department of Health remind everyone to protect themselves and others by avoiding the Three Cs: Closed Spaces, Crowded Places, and Close-Contact Settings and by wearing a mask in public:

  • Closed Spaces. Avoid closed spaces with poor ventilation that could allow contagious droplets to linger in the air.
  • Crowded Places. Avoid crowded places with many people nearby; the greater the number of individuals in an area, the greater the chances of COVID-19 spreading from person-to-person.
  • Close-Contact Settings. Avoid close-range conversations and stay at least six-feet from others.

In addition to avoiding the three Cs and wearing facial coverings in all public spaces, individuals should continue to practice social distancing by staying at least six-feet away from others; stay home when sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms; clean and disinfect countertops and frequently used surfaces often; and wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol). For additional prevention tips, visit www.floridahealthcovid19.gov/prevention.

King Tide Season Begins
King tides, defined locally as tides expected to be within 3 inches of the threshold for inundation in low lying areas of Fort Lauderdale, are expected on the dates below starting on September 16. Information for our neighbors has already been posted to the City’s dedicated king tide webpage (www.fortlauderdale.gov/kingtide). A series of actions outlined on the website have already been taken in anticipation of the king tide season including inspecting all tidal valves to confirm that they are in good working order.
Please note that higher than normal tides also occur at the full and new moon shown below as “Fall tides to monitor”. Starting on Tuesday August 18, the highest tide of the day came in 10 inches above predicted and exceeded the threshold elevation for flooding (see graphic below comparing predicted with observed tidal stage). If the tidal elevation anomaly continues, the City should expect tides to exceed the flooding threshold until at least August 24. Wet weather predicted later in the week will contribute to flooding concerns especially if the rainfall coincides with high tide (approximate time of high tide provided below).
We are beginning to receive complaints of ponding water at high tide from select low lying neighborhoods.
The best way for the City to receive and respond to neighbor concerns is by calling the City’s 24/7 Customer Service Center at 954/828-8000.
Tides are predicted to peak:

About Proposed Changes

As our community continues to face the impacts of sea level rise and aging infrastructure, we need to make significant investments in our stormwater system to prepare for the future, adapt to changing climate conditions, and ensure we can continue to deliver quality services. The City of Fort Lauderdale is updating its approach to stormwater billing and has adopted a new stormwater fee structure to fund major infrastructure improvements and create a stronger, more resilient community.

Based on a study completed by Stantec Consulting Services, it was recommended and approved by the City Commission, that the stormwater fee be moved from the monthly utility bill to the annual property tax bill, as a Non-Ad Valorem assessment. Using the property tax bill is the most efficient and straightforward method of assessing and collecting stormwater fees, especially in our City, where many high rises and condos have one utility account for multiple properties. Placing the charges on the property tax bill certifies the billing is coming directly from the City rather than a third party, streamlines the administrative process, provides for better accuracy, and ensures the new fee formula is properly applied to each property. Beginning in October 2020, your stormwater rate will be billed annually on your property tax bill instead of monthly on your utility bill. The stormwater management fee will appear as a stormwater assessment in the Non-Ad Valorem Taxes section of your Property Tax bill.

In addition to the change in the billing approach, the City has adopted a new stormwater fee structure with a methodology based on equitably recovering costs in proportion to the benefit that each property receives from the stormwater system. Depending on the type of parcel, the stormwater utility fee structure considers total square footage of the parcels or dwelling units and the trips generated by various property types. The City’s stormwater management services provide the dual benefits of protecting property from flooding and keeping roads passable. The stormwater assessment is listed as two-line items on the Property Tax bill based on the provision of these services. The resident Infrastructure Task Force and Council of Fort Lauderdale Civic Associations both support this hybrid fee methodology.
