TROPICAL DEPRESSION 13 UPDATE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2020

The City of Fort Lauderdale is monitoring Tropical Depression 13 which is currently located in the Atlantic approximately 500 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. The system is moving toward the west-northwest at 21 mph with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph.

In its latest update, the National Weather Service (NWS) expects gradual strengthening with the depression forecast to become a tropical storm on Friday.
According to the NWS, the current track is expected to bring the system close to the South Florida region late this weekend and early next week, with tropical storm conditions possible across South Florida by Monday. The intensity of the system, including the chance of hurricane conditions, will depend on the track the system follows as it approaches Florida. A track farther from the Greater Antilles would likely mean a hurricane approaching or possibly even impacting Florida, while a track over or very close to the islands would probably result in a weaker storm.

Neighbors are reminded to keep a close eye on this system. We are now entering the most active period of hurricane season, and it is important to have emergency plans in place and supplies ready as weather forecasts can change quickly.

For the latest updates, visit the National Hurricane Center website at www.nhc.noaa.gov. For hurricane preparation tips, visit the City's website at www.fortlauderdale.gov/hurricane.
