Census Takers Now Visiting
Non-Responsive Households
Enumerators employed by the U.S. Census Bureau are visiting households that have not completed the 2020 Census to collect responses in person. Canvassing started nationwide on August 11, 2020 and will continue through September 30 when the census ends.
There are currently 1,500 to 1,800 enumerators, commonly referred to as census takers, working in Broward County daily between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., including weekends. The Census Bureau reports that approximately 1,000 more census takers will be hired locally to complete follow-up visits to non-responsive households.

It's important to know how to identify a census taker when one is in your neighborhood. Census takers will wear an identification badge that includes their name, photograph, an official census logo, a U.S. Department of Commerce logo and an expiration date. Census takers will also have iPhones and tote bags that include the Census Bureau's logo.
All census takers are required to follow public health guidelines. They must wear a face mask, maintain 6 feet of space between them and the people they are interviewing and follow healthy hygiene habits.
The best way to avoid a visit from a census taker is to complete the census online; by phone at 1-844-330-2020 or mail back your form. The Census Bureau also has phone numbers available to complete the census in several other languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese.

City Commission Proclaims August and September 2020 as "Raise the Count" Months
The 2020 Census ends on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, which is about five weeks away and one month earlier than originally announced by the Census Bureau.
At 53.7%, Fort Lauderdale's self-response rate is critically low and indicates that of the City's more than 90,000 households, a little more than half have responded. If just 10 percent of the City's residents are not counted, it could mean a loss of $264 million to the community over the next 10 years.
To raise awareness for the importance of completing the census, the City Commission issued an official announcement, or proclamation, on August 18 dedicating August and September to the 2020 Census. The Commission also called on all of the City's residents to take part in their civic duty by completing the census to help shape Fort Lauderdale's future.

New Sewer Main Being Pulled Under Broward Boulevard
The City of Fort Lauderdale is working with David Mancini & Sons, Inc. to install a portion of a new 7.5 mile sewer main to upgrade infrastructure, create redundancy, enhance reliability, and improve services for our neighbors.
Crews are currently staged on SE 11 Avenue, just south of Broward Boulevard, overseeing the installation of approximately 3,100 feet of new 54-inch High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) pipe.
The pipe is being installed using a technique called underground directional boring, which eliminates the need to dig up the entire street, makes for a quicker more efficient installation, and requires much less time for restoration work.
The pipe is being pulled through a 72-inch underground pathway by a drill rig that is stationed on NE 11 Avenue just south of NE 6 Street. It is estimated that the full length of pipe will be installed over the next 4 to 5 days.
While the work is taking place, there will be intermittent closures on Broward Boulevard at NE 11 Avenue. Traffic on Broward Boulevard is also reduced to one eastbound and one westbound lane.
The pipe pull along 11 Avenue is part of the City’s larger Redundant Sewer Force Main Project. The $65 million initiative includes the installation of a new 7.5 mile wastewater transmission line from the lift station near Bayview Drive and NE 37 Street to the G.T. Lohmeyer Wastewater Treatment Plant on SE 18 Street. The project is currently 34% complete with 12,700 linear feet of pipe installed and 6,600 linear feet of pipe currently under construction.
Two contractors are working on the project simultaneously to expedite construction. Murphy Pipeline is installing the northern portion of the pipe, from NE 37 Court south to NE 8 Street. David Mancini & Sons, Inc. is installing the southern portion of the redundant line, from NE 8 Street south to the wastewater treatment plant. The estimated completion date for the project is June 2021.
