Fort Lauderdale reopened Community Court services on Wednesday – but with a twist. Hearings are now being held virtually in an open-air venue at Holiday Park.
With new coronavirus safety procedures in place, the City hopes to continue its commitment of providing services and resources to its homeless population. Participants in the 17th Judicial Circuit Community Court program have access to therapeutic, community services, drug treatment and social services.

“Reopening Community Court will again allow us to divert homeless people arrested for minor offenses away from jail time and into social services to address underlying issues they have – whether that’s drug abuse, medical problems or lack of job skills,” Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis said in a statement. “This program was an integral part of our earlier success and will be again.”

Community Court was launched in Fort Lauderdale in early 2019 in collaboration with the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, Broward County, Broward County Clerk of Courts, the Office of the Public Defender, the State Attorney’s Office, and service and treatment providers. The program is funded through a federal grant managed by the City, with Judge Florence T. Barner, County Court Judge, 17th Judicial Circuit, presiding.

Wear Facial Coverings at Polling Locations
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Broward County reminds residents who choose to vote at public polling locations, either during early voting or on November 3, to wear a facial covering. Broward County’s Emergency Orders require residents to wear a facial covering when in public. There is no exemption in the Emergency Order for Election Day. Therefore, residents are reminded that they need to wear a mask at the polling locations, or vote by mail, which does not require a mask, unless the voter is dropping off their ballot in person at a post office or early voting location. All 22 early voting locations have official ballot drop boxes that residents are able to use for their vote-by-mail ballots, without personal contact, and without having to stand in lines of people waiting to vote in person. Community Foundation President/CEO Honors
Rick Case's Legacy
Our hearts ache at the news that Rick Case has passed away. His larger-than-life presence, entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the community have impacted so many people in Broward. Together, Rick and Rita have used the power of philanthropy to change lives. Their generosity enables thousands of young people to shape a brighter future through the Boys & Girls Clubs. Their support forges new educational opportunities at Nova Southeastern University. And their visionary help empowers hardworking families to achieve homeownership through Habitat For Humanity. The Community Foundation is proud to be a part of helping build ‘A Rick Case Habitat Community.’ As Fundholders at the Community Foundation, Rick and Rita are part of our philanthropy family. We pay tribute to Rick and pledge to help Rita carry on his bold legacy. Rest in peace, Rick, and know that Broward is a better place because of you.

Community Foundation Helps Flamingo Gardens Overcome Coronavirus Crisis
When the coronavirus closed Flamingo Gardens for two months, we are proud to say that local philanthropists with charitable Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward stepped up to make sure hundreds of animals received the food and care they required.

Temporarily closing Flamingo Gardens to visitors halted ticket sales and sapped other revenue that the 60-acre botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuary relies on to feed more than 450 animals, tend to thousands of plants and care for its facilities.

Click here to learn how the Community Foundation stepped in and identified ways that our Fundholders could help this Broward treasure and its animals face the pandemic.
Celebrating Linda Carter’s Bold Impact For Broward
Linda wasn’t looking for a party. And the coronavirus did its best to try to curtail a celebration.

But not even a pandemic could stop us from saying a public thank you for Linda’s 23 years of bold service to the community she loves.

Soon after the start of Linda’s well-deserved retirement, the Community Foundation of Broward held the Linda Carter Day Celebration Day for our former President/CEO.

Click here to see how we pulled off this socially distant extravaganza, held at one of Linda’s favorite Fort Lauderdale spots – Hugh Taylor Birch State Park.
